Girona head coach Michel has admitted that he would one day like to be the head coach of AC Milan, given the links that have sporadically popped up.

Milan took a big step towards finishing in the top eight places in the first phase of the Champions League by winning 1-0 at San Siro last night, but it was far from an easy game against a team that came into the game in 30th.

In fact, on another day the LaLiga side might just have got something, missing big chances in the first half and having a goal disallowed when Bryan Gil strayed maybe a couple of inches offside before curling one past Mike Maignan.

Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz – better known as Míchel – spoke at a press conference after the full-time whistle at San Siro last night to give his thoughts on the game, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews.

What kind of game was it?

“We were consistent with our way of playing, but we failed to get points. Several teams penalised us in the Champions League with transitions. We must correct these errors.

“Despite everything, I am very proud of my players: they did what the club asked. The match was played well: we had several chances, but we also suffered a lot in the transition phase.”

Did you deserve more?

“Merits in football are worth what they are worth. Milan had many chances, but we were no less. I don’t know if we deserved a better result, but we were present, alive and aggressive. We want to return here: San Siro stadium is appreciated and admired by all the fans.”

Are you happy with the support?

“We always play alongside our fans. I saw them at the Milan Cathedral: it’s the first time something like this has happened to them.”

How did you prepare the team to face Milan?

“I tried to tell my players how to stop Leao and, except for the goal, we succeeded. Milan is very strong in transition. Then San Siro: it was the first time for me. ‘Sarà perché ti amo’: as the song says…

“You need to always be at a high level, you need players who make the difference. If we play against Mbappé, Leao and Dembelé, I can’t tell David Lopez to chase them. I have to change the way I play.”

There has been talk of you as a possible coach of Milan, would you like to do it one day?

“Milan is a fantastic club, one of the most historic in Europe. But they have a great coach now. Of course, I would have liked to become coach of Milan, but I’m happy with where I am now.”
