After having endured a rather difficult debut season at FC Barcelona in 2023/24 under Xavi Hernandez, Inigo Martinez has become one of the most important figures in Hansi Flick’s setup in the ongoing campaign.
The 33-year-old veteran has forged an excellent partnership with youngster Pau Cubarsi at the heart of the defence, even leaving one of the club captains, Ronald Araujo, behind him in the pecking order.
Such has been Martinez’s overall impact this season at both manager Hansi Flick and Barcelona have been fully won over by the Spanish international, reports Mundo Deportivo.
The Basque centre-back’s character and commitment are vital for the manager, who sees him as an example to follow. The German coach values his positioning, awareness, and constant communication with the back line.
Against Leganes, he also demonstrated a rare skill: a goal-saving tackle with his right foot – despite being left-footed. As soon as the match ended, the entire coaching staff went to congratulate him, Flick leading the way.

Flick was won over by the Spaniard very early in his tenure as manager, with the German insisting Barcelona register him as soon as possible at the start of the season.
The manager quickly saw how well Inigo understood and followed instructions and their connection today is rock-solid, with Flick seeing him as one of the most trusted figures in a young dressing room.
The veteran defender is calm, focused, and fully aware of what he needs to do. He takes care of himself meticulously, including his diet.
Martinez’s experience, leadership, and strong personality inspire courage, belief, and determination throughout the squad. Within the squad, he is viewed as a leader, and at the club, many call him the perfect signing.
Inigo, for his part, loves the club and the city of Barcelona while his family is also happy with the environment. The defender recently signed a new one-year contract, ensuring his continuity until 2026.
