Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been banned from driving and slapped with a fine worth over £1,000 after he was caught speeding on two occasions in a span of just three days.
Maguire has been disqualified for 56 days after his Range Rover was clocked doing 85mph in a 50mph zone near Manchester Airport.
He was caught by a mobile speed camera on March 5 last year before being captured again two days later, as he was doing 68mph in a 60mph zone on the A616 near his home city of Sheffield.
The England international was not present at Bolton Magistrates’ Court but solicitor Gwyn Lewis appeared on his behalf.
Prosecutor Karen Allanson told the court that Maguire was the registered keeper of the car and admitted being the driver. Ms Allanson told the court that they couldn’t offer Maguire a fixed penalty “due to the high speed.”
The court heard that Maguire pleaded guilty in October. At the time of the offence, he had three penalty points on his licence, relating to an offence in March 2021.
The United star’s solicitor said [via The Sun], “He was offered a speed awareness course but unfortunately because he was away from this country in the summer he wasn’t able to take up the course.”
Maguire was fined £666 and ordered to pay £120 in costs as well as a £266 surcharge. It’s understood that he would have received a longer ban if the magistrates handed him six points for the Wilmslow Road offence.
Chairman of the bench Mark Hardman remarked, “We are prepared to exercise our discretion due to Mr Maguire being out of the country and not being able to take part in his speeding course.”
Maguire, who missed a very good chance to score a winner against Liverpool at the weekend, was due to be out of contract at United but the Red Devils confirmed they would trigger the option to extend his stay at Old Trafford by an additional 12 months.
The 31-year-old appears to be a key player under new boss Ruben Amorim, who has repeatedly declared his admiration for him.
Maguire and United are back in action on Sunday when they face Arsenal at the Emirates in the third round of the FA Cup.
