Hoffenheim have today announced the departure of head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo.

The Bundesliga side currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga with just two league wins from their opening 10 games, and the American – who has been in charge since February 2023 – was relieved of his duties following Die Kraichgauer’s 0-0 draw at Augsburg on Sunday.

“The decision was not an easy one for us, especially since I have had a very good and open exchange with Rino in the past few weeks since I took office,” said Andreas Schicker, Managing Director of Sport. “However, several factors have now led us to ending our cooperation with Rino as head coach.

“With nine points after ten games, we currently have too few points in the Bundesliga, but the lack of consistency in our performances this season has also contributed to our decision.”

On his dismissal, Matarazzo added: “I will always look back on an instructive time that was characterised by different challenges and great moments of success. I am proud to have worked with this team and the coaching team, who were prepared to go through fire with and for each other. I will always be grateful for that.”

TSG confirmed that training will be led by Frank Fröhling and Benjamin Hübner until a successor to Matarazzo is found. As reported earlier, Sturm Graz’ Christian Ilzer is the primary candidate for the Sinsheim club.

Ilzer beat Red Bull Salzburg to the Austrian Bundesliga title last season and is currently managing the team in the Champions League.
