Huddersfield Town are reportedly in talks with former Hull City boss Ruben Selles as they continue to hunt for a permanent boss.

The Terriers have been without a permanent manager since early March after sacking Michael Duff - and got by till the end of the season with Jon Worthington taking temporary charge, who failed to revive their season as they finished very short of the League One play-offs - in 10th.

According to reports from journalist Alan Nixon, Huddersfield have opened discussions with Selles, who could very well be looking to dive straight back into management, after parting ways with Hull City mid-May.

Ruben Selles, Huddersfield Town appointment would excite Terriers' fanbase

The Spanish coach was only in charge of Hull City for five months, but has built a reputation for his own football philosophy previously. During his time at Reading, Selles said that his playing style was "not negotiable."

It's the style of play that FLW's Terriers pundit, Graeme Rayner, thinks would be an exciting appointment among supporters after a disappointing season.

"I think he would be an interesting one choice and perhaps one that would get fans excited purely because one of the things about the style of football we’ve employed most recently that has frustrated Town fans is it can be often be quite pedestrian, quite methodical and formulaic," Graeme told FLW.

"It becomes very easy for others to know how to setup against that. The way Ruben Selles plays is much more compact, high tempo, really high press, aggressive - would be a refreshing change."

"It would give fans something new - one thing that Town fans love is that kind of passion, determination and fighting spirit which i think Selles’ style of play seems to embody and that’s the reason that David Wagner was so popular - not because of the football being attractive but because of the spirit that it demonstrated and the determination."

"It will be an interesting choice - and I think a positive one. Certainly I think someone we should be looking at and obviously if wanting a quick return to management - then why not. He’s someone I can see Town fans getting behind."

Selles' style could be what Huddersfield Town need

The 41-year-old has experience across a lot of European Leagues, having worked as a coach in Spain, Greece, Russia, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Norway, and England. The most notable managerial role was his first - a short spell as Southampton manager in the Premier League during the 2022/2023 season.

At Hull City, Selles managed 29 games with a record of nine wins, seven draws, and 13 losses - works out to a win percentage of 31%, his highest win percentage was at Reading with 45% - where he was at for one year and six months.

For Town, the appointment of Selles would hopefully represent a big change in direction after a poor showing this past season - with owner Kevin Neagle describing the club's collapse as a "disease" on social media.

As Graeme suggests, Selles' approach would definitely see a switch from "pedestrian" football that has annoyed fans recently - potentially making him a popular choice in West Yorkshire.
