Kevin De Bruyne still retains the qualities to play at the standard required by Manchester City, fellow attacking talent Jeremy Doku believes.
The Belgium international is on his way out of the Etihad Stadium this summer following the expiry of his Manchester City contract, after club officials informed the 33-year-old of their insistence on not negotiating fresh terms.
De Bruyne – who is arguably Manchester City’s greatest ever player – will leave with an outstanding legacy at both the Etihad Stadium and in English football as a whole, recording sensational goal contributions figures and holding a wealth of silverware to his name.
The final few weeks of his Manchester City career have been filled with emotion at every opportunity on the field, and the attacking midfielder has continued to showcase his remarkable abilities on the ball and throughout play for Pep Guardiola’s side.
With moments of brilliance against Crystal Palace and Wolves at home in particular, scoring vital goals for City in their hunt for a top-five finish and UEFA Champions League qualification, many have been left wondering whether a mistake has been made by the club.
Speaking after City’s most recent 1-0 win over Wolves, Jeremy Doku revealed his sadness at De Bruyne’s pending departure from the Etihad Stadium, understanding the emotion shown by supporters since the 33-year-old’s announcement on social media.
“Obviously it’s very sad and I do think he still has the qualities to play here and he showed it again,” Doku insisted.
“It’s a pity he’s going to leave us but I still play with him in the [Belgium] national team so I can still get to enjoy that. To see player of his calibre leave is sad and I can understand them.”
The Manchester City forward continued, “I can understand why they are [sad]. I have only been for two seasons but I have seen what kind of impact he’s had even before I came.
“Kevin is one of the biggest legends in the history of this club. I just enjoy every moment I play with him and would say the supporters have to do the same.”
For now, it remains to be seen where Kevin De Bruyne will next play his football although the current indication is that the United States’ Major League Soccer are leading the chase for the Belgian’s signature.
Earlier reports had pointed out San Diego FC as the most likely destination for the midfielder for personal reasons, however the California-based club were soon withdrawn from interest with Inter Miami and The Chicago Fire swiftly moved to the front of the chase.
It is currently understood that the latter are favourites for his services beyond the conclusion of the ongoing season, and it is also yet to be known when precisely De Bruyne will move on from the Etihad Stadium given his contract expires midway through the FIFA Club World Cup.
