‘I know they’ve looked at him’: Ex-Utd scout details club’s plans for longstanding ‘special’ target

Manchester United have been linked with Jeremie Frimpong on countless occasions in recent years, though they have yet to ever materialise their interest with a formal approach or bid.
Now, with the 24-year-old confirmed to have a release clause worth £34 million embedded into his contract, Fabrizio Romano categorised him as ‘one to watch’ heading into the summer window.
Frimpong – hailed as a ‘special’ talent by manager Xabi Alonso – has been considered one of the most renowned attacking full-backs in Europe for several years now. His numbers at Bayer Leverkusen speak for themself, as he has notched 47 goal contributions (22 goals and 25 assists) in the Bundesliga alone since 2020/2021.
His most prolific campaign, perhaps unsurprisingly, came during Leverkusen’s scintillating unbeaten feat last season, during which they won 28 matches and drew six to finish atop the table with a 17-point advantage over second-placed Stuttgart.

However, United’s acquisition of Noussair Mazraoui last summer combined with Ruben Amorim’s preference for Diogo Dalot means a right-sided wing-back is unlikely to be targeted unless either is sold.
As well as that, there are doubts over Frimpong’s defensive capabilities, and if there’s one league that’s going to see him caught out for falling short, it’s England’s top-flight.
Ex-Red Devils scout Mick Brown weighed in on the prospect of United pursuing the Dutch international and the likelihood of a deal coming to fruition. He told Football Insider: “He’s a very, very attack-minded wing-back, but there are questions about him defensively.
“I’m not sure how well that would work at right-back in the Premier League, and I’m sure that’s something these clubs are also taking into account.
“He had an impressive season when they won the league, but I don’t think he’s anything special. I’m not convinced Man United will be too keen on him either.
“I know they’ve looked at him and he’s a name on a list, but only in that he’s a right-wing-back playing in Europe, so it would be strange if they hadn’t looked at him.
“I’d be surprised if he was their first choice, we’ll put it that way.”
