This revelation came in an interview with BBC Radio Tees after Giles' side succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Preston North End.

The full-back's temporary switch from the Humberside club was confirmed on Thursday evening as they signed him up for the final six months of the season.

Giles previously had a terrific loan spell with Boro in the 2022-23 season and will be hoping he can recreate some of that form that placed him so prominently in Michael Carrick's mind.

The Teesside club currently occupy sixth place, with a tight race for the play-offs as Bristol City, Blackburn Rovers, and Watford lurk just behind them.

Speaking to BBC Radio Tees post-match, Giles expressed his delight at returning to the club for the remainder of the campaign.

He said: "It feels amazing, absolutely amazing. It was disappointing not to come away with anything today, but the reception I got from the fans, I can't ask for more than that."

When asked if Boro had always had this pull for him, Giles responded: "Yes, I think that's because of the love and support everyone has always shown me. It doesn't go unnoticed. The last few years have been a learning curve for me, but I've always felt that love here, and it has never gone away.

"When the opportunity was concrete to come back, it was a no-brainer for me."

Finally, the left-back was asked whether he would like to make the "marriage" permanent, to which he responded: "Of course I would. Like I said previously, sometimes things are out of my control.

"I've just got to focus on the here and now, we have 18–17 games to play and I will look to give my all in those games, and what will be, will be. But, obviously, of course, I would love to."

The left-back role was clearly an area for improvement at Middlesbrough, and adding Giles to the squad will thoroughly enhance Carrick's options.

Looking back at his 2022-23 season, the defender was a constant threat down the left-hand side, as he contributed 11 assists and created 87 chances for those around him.

Boro fans will be hoping to see a repeat of this form in the near future, and if he can deliver once again, Middlesbrough may look to make his stay permanent next summer.

While the past 18 months haven’t gone as planned, there’s clearly still a talented player there, and it's likely we'll see him thrust into the starting XI in the Tees-Wear derby next Monday night.
