Harry Kane (31) has opened up to France Football on his role as England captain. The Bayern Munich centre-forward has notably revealed he draws inspiration from former Three Lions skipper Wayne Rooney. The former Everton and Manchester United striker was England’s top goalscorer before being eventually overtaken by Kane. “I remember when Wayne Rooney was awarded for scoring the most goals with England“, Kane said. “He immediately said he expected me to be next. I found that incredibly kind of him.“
Rooney was England’s captain when Kane made his England senior debut. The Bayern Munich striker recalled how Rooney personally welcomed him into the national team setup and explained to him what it means to wear England’s jersey. “It obviously helped me to understand this step and, in turn, I use it today to integrate the new talents who arrive with us.”
Kane was asked by France Football what kind of leader he is within an England team packed with strong characters. “When I have something to say to the guys, I say it without problem. They know it, I’ve never had a problem saying things clearly.” The 31-year-old England captain adds that he’s not one to talk or shout at his teammates all of the time. “I’m more of a leader by example, by performing and always making team efforts as well as being extremely rigorous and focused. The guys can’t doubt my commitment because they see it. This is how you lead. “
