Inter and Milan were among the first top clubs to spot the mercurial talent of River Plate whizz-kid Franco Mastantuono. However, the window of opportunity to bring the 17-year-old prodigy to Serie A may have passed.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have taken the lead in the race to sign the Argentine teen sensation. Widely considered one of the world’s brightest prospects, Mastantuono is ready to take the next step in what promises to be an illustrious career.

Inter and Milan considered opening talks with River Plate last year. Nerazzurri vice-president Javier Zanetti holds his compatriot in high regard and would probably love to see him at the San Siro. After all, there’s a special connection between the Argentines and the 20-time Italian champions.

In addition to Inter, Milan had hoped to capture Mastantuono’s services before the starlet signed a new contract in Buenos Aires in January. River Plate included a substantial $46 million release clause in the deal, effectively ruling the Rossoneri out of the race.

Mastantuono’s price may be prohibitive for Milan and Inter. However, clubs like Man City and PSG can meet the Argentine powerhouse’s demands without flinching. With the Citizens set to part with long-serving stalwart Kevin De Bruyne, they are in the market for a new playmaker.

Despite his tender age, Mastantuono fits the bill. He is a star in the making, with many already comparing him to his esteemed countrymen Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
