Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta feels that Antonio Conte is a “serial winner” but that Simone Inzaghi is “on the same path.”

Marotta spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, ahead of this evening’s Serie A clash between Inter and Napoli.

This evening, Inzaghi and Conte go head-to-head in the dugout for the first time in more than three years.

The last time that the pair faced off, Conte was Inter coach, and Inzaghi was in charge of Napoli.

But now things are very different. It is Inzaghi who is coach of the Nerazzurri, having taken over from Conte in the summer of 2021 and stayed in the role for more than three seasons.

Meanwhile, Conte is at Napoli. He made the move to Campania during the summer.

When Conte was coach of Inter, he had two very successful seasons. These culminated in the Serie A title in the 2020-21 season.

Conte’s legacy at the Nerazzurri cast a big shadow over Inzaghi. Particularly after the former Lazio coach failed to win the title in the 2020-22 campaign.

But each season that Inzaghi has been at Inter has seen further growth.

Last season, Inter won the Serie A title for the first time since Conte was in charge. And moreover, they did so in even more emphatic style than they had under the former coach.

Inter President Marotta: “Conte A Serial Winner, Inzaghi On The Same Path”

Inzaghi has certainly caught up to Conte at Inter.

However, it is still the Napoli coach who has the wider-reaching history in terms of trophies.

Conte had won league titles with the likes of Juventus and Chelsea before his arrival at Inter.

And the 55-year-old has come in to Napoli and made a big impact. He has the Partenopei top of the table at the moment, albeit Inter have the chance to overtake them if they win this evening.

Conte has shaken off his spell at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. He has reasserted himself in Naples.

In the view of Inter President Marotta, “Napoli are a clear candidate for the Scudetto.”

“I know Conte well,” Marotta said. “And the club were champions of Italy two seasons ago.”

“They have what it takes to fight for it right to the end,” the Inter President said.

“This is thanks to Conte, a coach who’s a serial winner. But our coach Inzaghi is also headed on the same path.”

Meanwhile, Inter President Marotta said that he’s “happy” with the selection decisions and squad rotation of Inzaghi.

“Clearly, having so many matches so close together and having a squad put together for so many matches, it’s right to rotate the team.”

“I always talk about having starters, and then co-starters in the squad,” Marotta declared.

“There’s not much of a difference between the players who start on the pitch, and those who start on the bench.”

Marotta argued that Inzaghi “makes his decisions based on the opposition, and based on what he sees in training in the days before the match.”
