Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City yesterday was disappointing in so many ways. The Blues were slow and lifeless both in attack and defence. There was little passion, belief, leadership or spirit on show. After an opening goal which came from a huge slice of luck, they sat back and were happy to let their opposition recover and grow into the game.
They trotted slowly towards the slaughterhouse, but ultimately the killer blow came from their own player.
Robert Sanchez’ decision to wander from his goal towards the onrushing Erling Haaland was soon showed to be foolish.
Robert Sanchez left stranded far from his goal.
On Sky, Jamie Redknapp made the issue with Sanchez very clear, and predicted he would be dropped soon:
“The problem is it just gives nerves to everybody. It’s becoming very public now. The Chelsea fans get a little bit anxious when he’s on the ball, thinking he’s going to make a mistake, then he compounds it by doing things like today,” Redknapp said.
“That’s purely decision-making, that’s a bad decision he makes, he doesn’t have to come out there like he did and if he stays in the goal, Haaland probably doesn’t score. It’s poor goalkeeping. The only thing he can do is keep working hard in training and try to turn it around, but it’s not looking good for him at the moment.”
He’s totally right. It’s not just the mistakes Sanchez makes – it’s how the defenders respond to that, then how the other players respond to the lack of confidence at the back, then how the crowd responds to their team looking totally spooked.
Of course our finishing needs to improve, of course our midfield needs more presence. But we can survive deficiencies in those areas. Our nightmare goalkeeper situation is the heart of the issue.
