Paul Scholes believes it’s been to easy for Cole Palmer at Chelsea and the forward needs to be “challenged” more.

Palmer has been nothing short of a revelation since joining the Blues from Manchester City in the summer of 2023.

The 22-year-old has quickly established himself as Chelsea’s best player and one of the best in the Premier League.

Scholes feels Palmer needs to be challenged more

Palmer has once again been Chelsea’s main attacking threat this season with 14 goals and six assists in the Premier League, whilst he has 39 goals and 21 assists in 78 games for the Blues.

The England international has struggled in recent weeks, and hasn’t found the back of the net since the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on January 14th.

He missed a penalty in the recent win over Leicester, and the Blues will hope Palmer returns to his best after the international break.

However, Palmer missed Sunday’s defeat against Arsenal with a muscle injury and the Blues will anxiously be awaiting results of a scan which is believed to have taken place on Monday.

There have been questions posed about Palmer’s future if Chelsea don’t qualify for the Champions League, but it’s believed there’s no exit clauses in his deal allowing him to leave if that does happen.

The game appears to come so naturally to Palmer and Scholes believes it’s to easy for him to play in this Chelsea team.

“I’ve felt for a while that for Cole Palmer, it’s almost been too easy for him to play in that Chelsea team, he knows he’ll play every week and be the best player,” he told The Overlap Fan Debate.

“I think he needs challenging more, and I don’t get the impression that they [Chelsea] are desperate to win anything.”

Whilst it’s unlikely Palmer leaves anytime soon the Blues need to be able to offer regular Champions League football and show they can compete for major trophies if they are to keep their best players.
