It was reported by the Mirror earlier this month that the 46-year-old is closing in on replacing Mark Robins at the CBS Arena.

The Sky Blues are without a manager for the first time in seven years after a successful period under Robins.

He oversaw promotions from League Two and League One during his second stint with the club, as well as bringing them to the FA Cup semi-final last season.

However, a difficult run of form at the start of this campaign contributed to the decision to part ways, leading to speculation over Lampard’s potential arrival.

Carragher has warned that following a beloved manager at a club like Coventry could be a tricky position to find himself in as a coach.

He has compared the situation to the one Wayne Rooney was in at Birmingham City last year, where he replaced John Eustace and only lasted 15 games in charge.

“I was talking to my son about this and it reminds me a little bit - remember when Wayne [Rooney] went to Birmingham? And the guy there, everyone is saying ‘I can’t believe he’s lost his job’,” said Carragher, via the Stick to Football podcast.

“I think when you go in as a manager, and everyone is there saying ‘that manager never should’ve lost the job’ and if people are saying that about Mark Robins, you’re on the back foot straight away.

“And it’ll be ‘oh, Mark Robins got us to the FA Cup semi-final last year’ and it’s just think stay out of that one.”

Lampard has been out of work since his interim stint with Chelsea came to a conclusion at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Coventry City league position

Whoever will take over at Coventry will be looking to guide the team towards a play-off push.

Lampard has experience in this arena, having earned a top six finish with Derby County during his sole year in charge at Pride Park.

The Sky Blues are currently 17th in the table, one point clear of the relegation zone after 15 games, with the top six currently nine points clear.

Next up for Coventry is a home clash against second place Sheffield United on 23 November, in what could be the new manager’s first game in charge.

Lampard appointment would be risky for both parties

Lampard’s recent track record in management is less than stellar, and taking a Championship role would be an admission that he needs to take a step backwards to move forwards again.

Meanwhile, Coventry are in a difficult position because replacing Robins with anybody will be tricky due to the connection he had with the supporters.

Lampard is a big name, and that might excite people, but it is also a huge risk.

Coventry and Lampard will want to avoid comparisons to Rooney’s Birmingham stint given how horrendously that went, but it could prove an apt one from Carragher if the move comes to fruition.
