Josko Gvardiol played one of his best games of the season during Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Chelsea last weekend. The Croatian international scored one, and on another day, he could’ve had a hat trick. He was a constant threat going forward to the Chelsea defence. The hope is he can carry that form into Manchester City’s pivotal Champions League fixture against Club Brugge tonight. Speaking ahead of tonight’s match Gvardiol told the media that he is willing to play wherever he has to for Pep Guardiola. Based on his prodigious talent he is built to do just that for Manchester City.

When you watch Josko Gvardiol play at left-back for Manchester City his immense technical ability stands out. Especially going forward. At times, he looks more like a winger than he does a defender. Gvardiol developing into an attacking weapon has been a feature of his play since arriving at the Etihad last summer. His goals last season were pivotal in Manchester City winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title. He’s carried that goal-scoring form into this season by scoring 5 goals so far this campaign. But you get the sense that Gvardiol could one day play in midfield as well as left-back or centre-back for Pep Guardiola’s side. He has the talent to do just that.

Speaking yesterday during his pre-game press conference ahead of tonight’s match against Club Brugge, Josko Gvardiol said he is willing to play wherever he is required to do by Pep Guardiola. He explained: “I am the one available and whatever he [Pep] wants from me – centre-back, wing-back – I am ready. I can see it is difficult for the manager. I said many times that I am a defender. My job is to protect the goal. If I find myself at the opposite goal I will do everything to score and help the team in the game. I like to play with the ball. The only thing is if I am high it can be difficult to come back and defend.”

We have seen Josko Gvardiol play at centre-back and at left-back already for Manchester City. He is more than willing to play wherever is required to help his team’s cause. With his technical ability, it would be no surprise to see him add even more strings to his bow during his time at Manchester City. Perhaps he could one day become a midfielder in time as well which would make him invaluable to Pep Guardiola’s side. But the fact that Gvardiol is willing to play wherever it takes for his team speaks volumes about his character. You’d even go as far as to say his character is on a par with his tremendous ability. That’s saying something given just how talented a player Josko Gvardiol is.
