It was reported on Thursday morning by Alex Crook that the Saints have rejected a loan offer from the Championship side for the 23-year-old.

Archer joined the Premier League side in the summer, making the switch from Aston Villa.

So far this season, the striker has featured 21 times for the club in the league, including 10 starts, contributing two goals.

Bailey has claimed that Leeds are pushing to complete a deal to sign Archer before the January transfer window closes next week.

He believes that a loan with an obligation to buy clause could be enough to complete a deal for the forward.

Leeds are pushing for Cameron Archer – he is a young player with so much potential, they saw that at rivals Middlesbrough not long ago,” said Bailey, via Leeds United News.

Leeds will have to give an obligation based on promotion.

“They are getting a player they can invest in the long-term with, this is not a stop-gap option although he will immediately enhance their charge to the Premier League.”

Leeds United’s promotion ambition

Leeds are in the fight for automatic promotion to the Premier League this season, with Daniel Farke’s side currently sitting top of the table.

The German coach has Mateo Joseph, Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford to choose from as forward options, although there is some uncertainty over the latter’s future at the club.

Archer has also shown himself as capable of playing behind the striker, which is a position that could fit in this Leeds team.

The Whites are two points clear of second place Sheffield United going into their weekend clash against Cardiff City on 1 February.

Archer signing would be a promising move

Bringing in Archer would be a very solid upgrade on Bamford, if he is to leave Elland Road this month.

The forward has shown he can score goals at this level, scoring 18 from 40 appearances between loan stints at Preston North End and Middlesbrough.

His versatility will also be useful for Farke’s side, as he could lead the line, or he could play with Piroe or Joseph in this current system.
