Juventus and Danilo are reported to be finally starting negotiations to terminate his contract by mutual consent, allowing him to join Napoli as a free agent.

The veteran wore the captain’s armband in recent years, but has dropped down the pecking order following the arrival of coach Thiago Motta.

Now 33, his contract only runs to the end of the current campaign, although there is an option to extend if certain conditions are met.

According to Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, the talks to terminate that deal early by mutual consent are finally starting in earnest.

Until now, Danilo’s agent has been focused on agreeing personal terms with Napoli, who are only prepared to take him as a free agent rather than on a transfer from Juventus.

His contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona would then run to June 2026.

The defender joined Juve from Manchester City for €37m in the summer of 2019 and has made 16 competitive appearances so far this season.

He can play in central defence, as a right-back or a left-back.

The situation has been clear since he was frozen out of training ahead of the Supercoppa Italiana.
