Juventus director Cristiano Giuntoli rushed to defend Thiago Motta, stating that he’s not at risk and that he still believed in the project. However, the management is reportedly starting to examine whether to continue with the boss following the double early elimination from the Champions League and the Coppa Italia, a disappointing campaign in Serie A, and his recent outburst, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
The hierarchy appointed him to lead a new three-year project, but his first season has been shaky, to say the least. He’s no longer considered untouchable after the recent events.
Other than for the results, Thiago Motta could pay the price for the friction with the Juventus locker room. While he hadn’t lambasted the players publicly before Wednesday, he’s brutally honest in practice and during the video sessions. The players would like more empathy.
The Bianconeri have gained some steam in Serie A thanks to their first real winning streak of the year, overtaking Lazio in the race for fourth place. However, qualifying for the Champions League might not be enough.
He had tried a soft approach for months, so it was about time to change the tone and see how the footballers respond. Dismally crashing out versus PSV wasn’t enough to light a fire under them. Strained relationships in the dressing room could do any coach in. Though, if he goes, Giuntoli should be next since he hand-picked him and put together a pricey squad that has underperformed. That’d be really seismic and more akin to how they operated in the past, in addition to further setting them back, as continuity is essential to building something new.
