Kyle Walker has issued a rallying cry following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton yesterday. While what Manchester City’s captain said is correct he must also step up to help his team. The England international was poor during the final half-hour of yesterday’s match. That performance follows his dreadful display against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Manchester City need their captain back at his best sooner rather than later.
Speaking after his team’s defeat Kyle Walker issued a rallying cry to his team. He told mancity.com that it is in City’s senior players to show the way through their losing streak. Walker said: “This is the time where I want to see the players and real characters come through. It’s all good for the last eight years when we’ve been winning and dominating games. But now it’s tough, this is the time where us as the senior members have to pull the players through who haven’t been here for a while and show them the foundations of this club. We’ve built those foundations over the last eight years and that will get us through this patch. It’s football, and with the players and manager we have, with the Club, and the fans, it will pass. We need to weather the storm and make sure after the international break we come back fit and ready to go for an important part of the season.”
Everything Kyle Walker said after his team’s defeat to Brighton rings true. Manchester City have the players and the manager to come through their current winless streak. Walker’s statement didn’t miss as he perfectly summed up how the champions will return to winning ways. They’re too good not to. When the world champions have a host of key players return from injury it is likely that Pep Guardiola’s side will resemble the team that has dominated English football for the last 7 seasons. But to match his words Kyle Walker needs to lift his performance as well.
Manchester City’s captain hasn’t been anywhere near his best so far this season. A knee injury and a late start to this season after a busy summer has seen Kyle Walker play catch up all season long. His last two starts have come against Bournemouth and Brighton. The full-back has been well below his best in both of those games. Yesterday he started the game well in the first hour. But as the game wore on Kauro Mitoma gave Walker a torrid time. Joao Pedro also did the same to City’s captain. The challenge is there for Walker to quickly return to his best. His team needs him to lead the way with his performances after the international break.
Kyle Walker’s statement following his team’s defeat yesterday was spot on. It is on City’s senior players to lead them out of their current rut. Walker is one of those and his performances must lift to help his team. He can’t be a liability like he was against Bournemouth and Brighton. He is too important to Manchester City to play that way. The challenge is there for Walker’s performance to match his words after the international break.
