Barcelona’s 16-year-old goalkeeper Iker Rodriguez is set to train with the first team in the coming days, according to a report from SPORT.

In just three weeks, Rodriguez will celebrate his 17th birthday. Having been part of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy since his earliest footballing days as a pre-benjamin, he has emerged as one of the academy’s most promising goalkeepers.

His performances have not only made him a starter for Spain’s U-17 national team but have also earned him a reputation as a highly ambitious young talent from Sabadell.

Flick has taken note of him

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and his coaching staff have taken notice of Iker’s growth and decided to give him the opportunity to train with the senior squad.

This experience will allow them to assess his development and gauge how he might fit into future plans for the first team.

Interestingly, this will not be Iker Rodriguez’s first experience training with the senior side.

He has previously shared the pitch with established goalkeepers like Inaki Pena, Wojciech Szczesny, Ander Astralaga, and Diego Kochen.

His first training session with the first team came in September 2024, shortly after renewing his contract with the club.

Who is Iker Rodriguez?

Rodriguez is part of the talented 2008 generation, which also includes standout players like cousins Guille and Toni Fernandez.

Known for his remarkable height and excellent technical and physical attributes, the young goalkeeper has the tools needed to reach the top level of football.

This season, the 16-year-old has made nine appearances with Juvenil B and has been called up four times for Juvenil A, featuring in one match.

His performances have built on a stellar campaign last season with Cadet A under Arnau Blanco, who now serves as one of Flick’s key assistants. Blanco’s role has been crucial in helping academy players integrate with the senior team.
