The hosts began in the ascendancy as chats of ‘Europapokal’ emerged from Bayern's Sudkürve. Serge Gnabry had a chance to open the scoring for the Bundesliga leaders in just the third minute when he sent a header towards goal that was cleared by Canadian defender Alistair Johnston.
However, from this moment onwards, the visitors will feel incredibly unfortunate not to have taken the lead in the first half.
After Callum McGregor missed a decent opportunity on his left foot, former Bayern Man Nicolas Kühn saw a soft effort cleared off the line by Raphael Guerreiro in the 16th minute.
Just moments later, Daizen Maeda was an inch away from getting onto the end of an Arne Engels ball across the box.
While Bayern commanded the half regarding possession, Celtic's well-executed press continued to cause huge problems for the hosts.
Harry Kane came closest to opening Bayern's account in the 44th minute, with a curling effort from inside the box rattling off the crossbar, before the Englishman was substituted for Kingsley Coman heading into the second period after a reported calf problem.
However, as the second period went on, the hosts struggled to get into a rhythm whilst the encounter became scrappy and sloppy from a Bayern perspective.
And it was in the 64th minute that Celtic forced a golden opportunity to send the travelling Glaswegian contingent into raptures.
Capitalising on a mistake made by Kim, Kühn calmly slotted the ball past Manuel Neuer inside the box to see the 25-year-old net against his old club after his first minute strike was cruelly ruled out in the first leg at Celtic Park.
Matching Saturday's clash against Leverkusen, Bayern were guilty of being flat, with a huge lack of any real energy or impetus. The remaining 25 minutes of normal time would prove to not just be one of, if not Bayern's biggest test of the season.
Hurling himself at the ball in the 74th minute, Goretzka put a free header wide of Schmeichel's post in front of the Südkurve in a moment rather indicative of the night thus far for the hosts.
Leroy Sane also went on to come close after working the ball onto his left foot before curling a shot just inches away from finding the top corner.
Carrying on to get into their groove, the hosts began to pile on the pressure; however, Celtic stood tall and defiant. Efforts from Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich were dealt with comfortably by a defensive wall and Schmeichel respectively.
However, to live up to the famous ‘FC Hollywood’ nickname, Bayern München proved that it is never over until it is over. When Leon Goretzka met a delicious Michael Olise ball, forcing a world-class save from Schmeichel, before Alphonso Davies bundled the ball over the line in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Saving themselves after consecutive under-par performances, Bayern put themselves into the round-of-16 hat. Vincent Kompany, his side and supporters alike will want to forget the previous 93 minutes, however.
