Leeds United are expected to be in the market for a big-name striker if they win promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds United will be targeting a ‘big-name’ striker with experience should they return to the Premier League, with a move for Norwich City’s Josh Sargent seen as unlikely.
The Whites are flying high at the top of the Championship, with Daniel Farke’s side looking hugely impressive as they close in on a return to the top-flight.
However, despite their quality, we have seen in recent years how there is a big jump up to the Premier League, so the recruitment team will already have plans in place if promotion is sealed.
And, it appears the Yorkshire outfit will be eyeing up a move for a striker, as Football Insider has revealed that they will be in the market for a number nine who has Premier League experience.
Whilst no names are mentioned, the update states that Leeds are not expected to sign Sargent, who they have been linked with in the past.
Instead, it’s said that they will be ‘setting their sights on more ambitious targets’ than the USA international, who could also be a Premier League player, as Norwich are in the mix for promotion via the play-offs themselves.
The three promoted clubs were relegated from the Premier League last season, and there’s a possibility it will happen again in the current campaign.
So, that indicates there is a gulf between the leagues, meaning the Leeds owners will need to invest in the squad if they do win promotion.
This development shows that 49ers Enterprises are well aware of that, and the summer window needs to be about adding real quality to Daniel Farke’s group.
There are a lot of players who have been in the Premier League before, but Leeds will lack that star quality against the elite, and most would agree that a striker has to be one of the priorities.
Joel Piroe is Leeds’ top scorer, but he hasn’t always convinced. Meanwhile, Mateo Joseph is still a young player, and Patrick Bamford continues to suffer bad luck on the injury front.
So, there are potentially exciting times ahead for Leeds, but whilst the recruitment team have to plan ahead, Farke will know that nothing is done just yet.
The immediate focus will be on finishing the job, though, with Leeds
