Leeds United are still pushing hard to secure the signing of Southampton forward Cameron Archer before the end of the January transfer window tonight, according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook.

However, the Elland Road club may need to look elsewhere for the attacking reinforcement manager Daniel Farke wants as the Saints star is more likely to remain with the Premier League club beyond tonight.

23-year-old Archer brings the Championship experience Leeds could do with to the table following loan spells at Preston North End and Middlesbrough.

The Southampton star played 40 games in the division, weighing in 18 goals and seven assists, and the Yorkshire club could receive a much-needed boost in front of goal with such a player within their ranks.

However, relegation-fighting Saints are desperate to hold on to their Premier League status and could be desperate to hold on to him today given that there is not plenty of time left to recruit a replacement.

Leeds will keep monitoring the situation and hoping a deal for Archer can be done, and they will also be looking at other options if one of their other attacking targets can be available for a deadline-day move.

He was not named in the Southampton matchday squad at the weekend due to a groin injury, and it remains to be seen whether they will accept an offer from the Whites to bring him to Elland Road in a loan deal until the end of the campaign.

Saints manager Ivan Juric has used Archer sparingly since taking over the reins on December 23, with the former Aston Villa forward starting just one of the eight matches the Croatian has overseen.

Archer has also only started ten Premier League matches since moving to the south coast in a £15 million deal last summer, and a move to where he can play more regularly could be very appealing to him.
