Manchester City‘s deepening gloom shows few signs of abating as Pep Guardiola’s side travel to face relegation candidates Leicester City on Sunday at 2:30pm.
Leicester (4-2-3-1): Stolarczyk; Justin, Coady, Vestergaard, Kristiansen; Winks, Soumare; Buonanotte, El Khannouss, Mavididi; Vardy
Man City (4-2-3-1): Ortega; Lewis, Akanji, Gvardiol, Ake; Silva, Kovacic; Savinho, Foden, Doku; Haaland
The Citizens find themselves a whopping 14 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, with the Reds also having played a game less.
Leicester, meanwhile, went down 3-1 against the rampant Reds at Anfield on Thursday, a result which when coupled with Wolves’ 2-0 win over Manchester United saw the Foxes drop into the relegation zone.
This game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League.
Man City’s recent run of poor results now stands at one win in 13 games in all competitions after Everton stood firm at the Etihad on Boxing Day to claim a point.
Guardiola’s side led, fortuitously it has to be said, early on in that contest but they couldn’t hold on to it as Iliman Ndiaye levelled with a clever finish.
The perfect chance to restore their lead arrived not long after half-time when Savinho was fouled and Man City won a penalty.
Erling Haaland had scored 15 of 16 of his previous penalties in the league, with the other hitting the woodwork. But this one was turned away by Jordan Pickford after he won the battle of wits.
The Norwegian talisman made blistering start to the campaign, scoring 10 goals in his first five Premier League games. But he has only managed three in 13 since, with his shot conversion rate dropping from 38.5% to a lowly 6.4% in the same timeframe.
The missed penalty was Haaland’s only shot on target against Everton and he cut a frustrated figure leaving the field at full-time.
Much of the summer speculation centred on whether or not Guardiola needed to recruit some cover after Julian Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid, with the theory being that Man City could be vulnerable if Haaland were to get injured.
What has transpired is that Haaland, as well as many of his team-mates, have lost confidence and alternative striking options are thin on the ground.
Perhaps a trip to Leicester — where Man City have won on their last four visits without conceding a goal — will perk the struggling champions up.
Foxes boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will be eager to restore Jamie Vardy to his side after the veteran forward missed the trip to Liverpool with a knock.
Anfield goalscorer Jordan Ayew misses out here after subsequently earning his fifth booking of the season and a suspension. Facundo Buonanotte may get a recall in his stead.
Mads Hermansen, Wilfred Ndidi, Abdul Fatuwu and Ricardo Pereira are all set to miss out again for the home side.
Guardiola isn’t getting any relief from either results or injuries it seems. Ruben Dias, Jack Grealish, John Stones, Kyle Walker, Ederson and Matheus Nunes have all missed the games against Aston Villa and Everton either side of Christmas.
Some of the walking wounded may be fit enough to play a part at the King Power Stadium, where the long-term absences of Oscar Bobb and Rodri, in particular, will be felt again.
