Ligue 1 Predictions, Round 20
GFFN editor-in-chief Luke Entwistle and GFFN’s Raphaël Jucobin face off in our Ligue 1 predictions competition. It’s three points for a correct score, two points for a correct score difference, and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?
SCORES
Raphaël: 100
Luke: 113
The defeat against Nice had the feeling of a one-off – granted – and that’s a good thing as far as OM are concerned but there is nonetheless reason for a bit of concern at the Vélodrome. It regards the offensive area, notably the No. 9 role. Elye Wahi has now left the club; he won’t be a bg miss having failed to settle since his summer move from Lens. However, the goals have dried up for the player that remains in their ranks – Neal Maupay. Not only is he failing to score goals, he is increasingly absent in build up and that is an issue, perhaps the biggest one facing OM, who despite last weekend’s defeat, are nonetheless on the right path.
The same cannot be said for Lyon. It is unclear exactly what path they are on in fact having fired Pierre Sage. On the face of it, it is a harsh decision. After all, he did not only save the club from relegation last season but also guided them to a Europa League finish and a Coupe de France final. In the Europa League this season, they are on course for a top eight finish and in the league, they are in the running for the Champions League places. But the decision has been taken and it is one that has reportedly had a negative effect on the dressing room. Paulo Fonseca has arrived in time for the match against fierce rivals of OM, who will be fired up for this encounter. Fonseca will be hoping to break Lyon’s recent poor streak. The managerial change and the fact this is a derby make this one of the most unpredictable fixtures of the season.
