Whiteley’s charges started well, navigating the opening 10 minutes with minimum fuss and looking to counterattack when possible before a lengthy stoppage that saw Smith need treatment following an aerial challenge from behind.

Following on from her pre-match presentation, Laws was called into action for the first time shortly after the 13-minute mark, tipping behind a Millie Turner effort destined for the corner with her fingertips.

The resolute defensive efforts continued impressively for the hosts as the half-hour came and went without much in the way of alarm and Liverpool created a momentary suggestion of an attacking opportunity for their own.

With the introduction of Harvey Elliot, Liverpool grew into the game and began to create chances which caused a very cagey feel around Wembley. The Englishman was willing to take the game by the scruff of the neck and urge his team forward.

Following a two-minute-long VAR check in the 94th minute Liverpool managed to sneak back a consolation goal from the unexpected goal scorer, of Chiesa. The Italian held his run well as once again Harvey Elliot played an inch-perfect through ball which allowed the dynamic forward to chop and change direction before slotting the ball past Nick Pope’s long outstretched leg. A gritty final 5 minutes for Newcastle saw them taking the ball to the corner and battling out to confirm the win, with every fan wearing black and white crying out to hear that final whistle.

Redmen Reacts

Well, it certainly wasn’t meant to be but in truth, this was a performance that is uncharacteristic of Liverpool this season generally and well below par for a final against a side desperate to end a wait for silverware.

The Reds must now dust themselves down, take their medicine and look to end the season strong as opposed to the recent whimper, hopefully picking up a 20th league title in the process.
