Liverpool head coach Arne Slot made use of the example set by Real Madrid to justify his team’s victory over Paris Saint-Germain this week.
Liverpool, of course, were back in action on the continent on Wednesday night.
After making the trip to Paris for a Champions League showdown with PSG, the Reds found themselves pinned in, and frankly dominated throughout the 90 minutes.
Incredibly, however, the Premier League leaders nevertheless managed to emerge on the right side of the result.
An Alisson masterclass between the posts set the stage for Harvey Elliott to secure an altogether undeserved victory for Liverpool at the Parc des Princes.
And one individual under no illusions that the Merseysiders were frankly ‘lucky’ to not be condemned to defeat on Wednesday is the aforementioned Arne Slot.
Speaking during a press conference on Friday, Liverpool’s headmaster began by explaining:
“If you want to win something, whether it’s the Premier League, the League Cup, the Champions League or the FA Cup, you need, sometimes, to have a game in which you don’t play your best football and have some ‘luck’, which maybe isn’t luck if you work hard like us.”
From here, Slot then highlighted the example of Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid as a team who regularly manage to get the job done when not at their best:
“There are no teams that play 38 league or Champions League games with only good football. I think Real Madrid are one of the best examples of this. They also find a way to win a game even if the other team plays better and that is what they do.”
