Liverpool, Liverpool top of the league

Liverpool are top of the UEFA Champions League and have Simon Mignolet to thank. In 2024!

Liverpool are officially ending match week four at the top of the UEFA Champions League. The Reds have won all four games, with an emphatic 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen their latest triumph.

They are also the only team with four wins. Aston Villa had the chance to join them on Wednesday evening but fell 1-0 at Club Brugge.

Happily for the Reds there is an emerging option for the right-wing slot from within their own ranks.

Ben Doak, 18, joined from Celtic back in 2022 and after his fair share of injury problems is finally putting together a consistent run of form.

The Scotland international is currently on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship, earning praise from Boro fans and observers of the league at large due to his electrifying performances.

Arne Slot is quite literally enjoying the best start a manager has ever had in the Premier League, and his side don’t look like slowing down any time soon.

Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo are all in electric form up front, Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones have come on leaps and bounds under their new coach and Liverpool’s backline looks the most solid it has for years.

Liverpool are now the only team to have won all four of their Champions League fixtures. That could change tonight with Aston Villa yet to play, but as things stand, it's the Reds who lead the way.

They're now top of the league as a result - something that's a complete first for the club. There has never actually been a league in the Champions League before this season, after all.

But the new-look format presented the chance and Liverpool took it. They're top of the Champions League (as well as the Premier League, we'd like to add) and the fans took advantage.

The Anfield crowd belted out 'Liverpool, top of the league, Liverpool Liverpool, top of the league' towards the end of the fixture. It's a first for the song in Europe, given it's never made sense before, meeting the first Liverpool set with their table-topping results.

Liverpool’s midweek Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen was arguably Arne Slot’s biggest challenge yet, and he smashed it.

Despite another slow start, the Reds were able to emerge as 4-0 victors over a side that hasn’t lost away from home in 18 months.

The line-up raised some eyebrows before kick-off, with Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo starting alongside each other.

Diaz would play through the middle and his performance will have given Slot the opposite of a selection headache, there is now a clear front three that will make Liverpool unstoppable.

The Colombian showed just how good he can be through the middle, a position which the Reds are a bit short in, by scoring his first ever Liverpool hat trick.
