Liverpool Transfer Target Offered New Contract to “Ward Off” Interest

As Liverpool prepare for a defining summer under Arne Slot, attention has inevitably turned to potential reinforcements. After winning the Premier League in his debut season, Slot is now poised to reshape the squad in his image. While the Reds’ interest in the midfield—evidenced by links to Martin Zubimendi—has garnered headlines, the full-back department is equally ripe for updates.
One name persistently linked is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Rayan Ait-Nouri. The Telegraph reports that Wolves are preparing to offer the 22-year-old Algerian a fresh contract in a move designed to “ward off interest from interested clubs”—namely Liverpool and Manchester City.
Wolves are clearly serious about holding on to a player they consider fundamental to their long-term plans.

It’s not difficult to see why Ait-Nouri has attracted suitors from the Premier League elite. With 35 appearances, five goals, and seven assists in the 2024/25 season, his end product has taken a marked leap.
His versatility—equally adept going forward and defensively solid—makes him a valuable asset in a modern, high-tempo system like Liverpool’s. The Telegraph further notes, “Ait-Nouri has two years left on his current deal and the Wolves hierarchy are ready to reward him for his performances and progress.” That progress has not gone unnoticed.
Wolves, under the stewardship of new manager Vitor Pereira, are planning a summer of consolidation rather than upheaval. The Telegraph highlights that they are “determined to retain the core of their squad” and hope Ait-Nouri “extends his stay at Molineux.”
This is a clear strategic statement from the Midlands club. After years of being viewed as a selling side, Wolves are intent on flipping the narrative. They are now prepared to fight off interest from the biggest clubs in England—at least when it comes to their key players.

The message is simple: unless Liverpool are prepared to pay significantly over the odds, they may need to look elsewhere to address their left-back needs.
Slot’s reported pursuit of Zubimendi and interest in players like Ait-Nouri underlines a considered approach to Liverpool’s evolution. Captain Virgil van Dijk recently emphasised expectations of a “big summer” and the desire to “challenge for titles in the upcoming years.”
Slot himself has reiterated that “a club like Liverpool always needed to be competitive,” reinforcing the expectation that there will be significant additions this window. However, it appears Liverpool may face stern resistance from Premier League counterparts unwilling to aid their continued resurgence.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, the link to Rayan Ait-Nouri is a promising one—but not without its complications. At just 22, he fits the profile of a player who could be developed into a long-term successor to Andy Robertson. His technical quality, attacking contributions, and positional awareness would complement Slot’s system, especially with Liverpool looking to build greater squad depth.
However, Wolves’ reported decision to tie him down to a new contract signals that prising him away won’t come cheap. With a rumoured £50 million valuation, Liverpool will need to decide whether Ait-Nouri represents the best value in a market rich with left-back options across Europe.
There’s also a growing sense that Arne Slot’s Liverpool will prioritise smart, surgical moves over the kind of blockbuster signings seen in the past. If Ait-Nouri is seen as essential to that vision, Liverpool could push hard—but Wolves’ resolve suggests it may take more than interest to make this happen.
Finally, with Darwin Nunez’s future reportedly uncertain and Matheus Cunha linked elsewhere, Liverpool may need to shift focus to where the gaps really are. Left-back is an area to strengthen, yes, but only if the price and profile align with the new direction under Slot.
