Liverpool have taken the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 16 points - albeit temporarily with Arsenal not in action until Sunday afternoon, after coming from a goal down to beat Southampton at Anfield.

Arne Slot called on Liverpool to treat the game as “the first of three finals in the next week”, before Tuesday’s Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain and then the Carabao Cup Final against Newcastle next Sunday. However, a defensive mix-up in first-half injury time between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker resulted in Will Smallbone breaking the deadlock.

Though after Darwin Nunez had equalised early in the second half, Mohamed Salah got the goal from the penalty spot to become the third-highest scorer in Liverpool history outright with 242.
