Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ankle injury, sustained during Liverpool’s recent clash with Paris Saint-Germain, has left the right-back sidelined and the team scrambling for a solution. While initial scans revealed no significant damage, the player’s timeline for recovery remains unclear, with reports suggesting he may return in April.
The injury to Alexander-Arnold, which occurred during a pivotal match against PSG, initially caused significant concern. His visible distress and the nature of the injury had many fearing a long-term absence. However, as The Mail‘s Lewis Steele reports, the early scans showed that there was no serious damage to the ankle, which is a relief for both the player and the club.

Although there is no set timeline for his recovery, Steele notes that Alexander-Arnold is “hoping to play again at some point in April,” and that his season is far from over. This optimistic outlook provides a glimmer of hope for both the player and Liverpool fans, who will be eagerly awaiting his return. Nevertheless, with Liverpool’s exit from the Champions League, only nine games remain in their domestic campaign, and Alexander-Arnold’s return in April would see him play a critical role in those matches.
With just nine matches left, the timing of Alexander-Arnold’s return is crucial. Liverpool’s fight for the title resumes on April 2 against Everton at Anfield, followed by a series of challenging fixtures. The absence of Alexander-Arnold was felt during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle, where the team struggled to create fluid attacking play. Jarell Quansah, stepping in for Alexander-Arnold, will continue to play a key role in his absence, but his inexperience at right-back may force Liverpool to experiment with alternative options like Curtis Jones.
Arne Slot’s side will also be without Conor Bradley, with the young right-back not expected to return quickly after the international break. This adds another layer of difficulty for Slot, who will have to find a solution to the right-back dilemma while keeping the momentum going for the title push.

While Liverpool fans are focused on the immediate challenge of qualifying for the Champions League and finishing the season strongly, another important aspect of Alexander-Arnold’s situation is his contract. The 26-year-old’s deal is yet to be signed, and speculation continues to mount about whether this could be his last season at the club. If Alexander-Arnold’s contract is not extended, it could mark the end of an era at Anfield, adding further urgency to his recovery.
However, despite the contract uncertainty, Arne Slot has made it clear that the club expects Alexander-Arnold to return before the season’s end. If the injury is not more severe than initially feared, a mid-April return could see the right-back available for key fixtures, including matches against Leicester on April 20 and Tottenham on April 27. This would provide Liverpool with a crucial boost as they fight for domestic honours.
