Liverpool’s Transfer Links: Alvarez, Isak, and the Summer Forward Search

Liverpool’s summer transfer plans are already taking shape, and the latest episode of Media Matters for Anfield Index featured David Lynch and Dave Davis discussing the club’s interest in Julian Alvarez, Alexander Isak, and Benjamin Šeško. With uncertainties surrounding Liverpool’s attacking options, the club could be set for a busy window.

Liverpool’s Interest in Julian Alvarez

David Lynch confirmed Liverpool have been keeping an eye on Julian Alvarez, currently at Atletico Madrid after his departure from Manchester City. However, he was quick to pour cold water on the idea that a deal is close:“I wasn’t particularly given encouragement that this is definitely one they’re going to pursue in the summer. I’ve spoken to a couple of people and didn’t get that vibe.”

Alvarez, a proven goalscorer with 23 goals this season, would bring Premier League experience and Champions League pedigree, but the difficulty of the deal remains a major obstacle.“He’s only been there for one season, he’s doing really well, and I’m sure they’ll fight tooth and nail to keep him… It looks a really tough deal to do.”

Isak and Cesko Among the Alternatives

Another name that refuses to go away is Alexander Isak. Newcastle’s Swedish forward has been on Liverpool’s radar, but as Lynch noted, much depends on their Champions League qualification: “If they get Champions League football, I really cannot see him leaving… He’s still got three years remaining on his deal, Newcastle’s hand would be incredibly strong.”

Despite Newcastle’s Carabao Cup success, the club’s financial situation could force them to consider offers, and Liverpool have a history of moving quickly—as seen with Luis Diaz when Tottenham showed interest. If Arsenal push for Isak, Liverpool could react accordingly.

A more realistic option, however, could be Benjamin Šeško. The 21-year-old Slovenian has been making waves at RB Leipzig, and his profile fits Liverpool’s recruitment model. Lynch confirmed: “100% a player that Liverpool are watching. Look at the club he plays for, his age profile, and the fact he’s scoring in a top five European league.”

Šeško might not be as developed as Alvarez or Isak, but his physical attributes and goalscoring ability make him an intriguing prospect.

Liverpool’s Forward Line: Set for a Shake-Up?

The need for a new forward is becoming clearer, particularly with potential departures in the summer. Lynch didn’t hold back when discussing the uncertainty surrounding several key players:“A couple of months ago, I would have said Liverpool would like to avoid any real churn… but I almost feel like it’s going to end up being unavoidable.”

The Luis Diaz situation is one to watch closely, with Lynch admitting that an offer could be too good to turn down: “If a decent offer comes in for Diaz with his level of production, his age, and his contract situation, you just know Liverpool would consider it.”

Meanwhile, Darwin Nunez’s future remains in doubt, with indications that he could leave in the summer, and Cody Gakpo struggling for form and fitness. Lynch also raised concerns over Caoimhín Kelleher, hinting that he might seek an exit due to lack of playing time.

With all these factors in play, Liverpool are almost certain to bring in a new forward—the only question is who and at what cost.

Physicality and Creativity: Midfield Priorities

Beyond the attack, Lynch highlighted Liverpool’s need for physicality in midfield, particularly after being dominated by Newcastle’s Joelinton: “You watch Joelinton up against them yesterday, just bullying them… Having someone in there who could do that for Liverpool would be very helpful.”

Names like Ederson (Atalanta) and Morten Hjulmand have been linked, but the club’s transfer priorities remain fluid.

Another key issue is replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s creativity if he departs: “If Trent goes, they have to find someone who can progress the ball for them… It was just so obvious how much they missed him.”

Bigger Picture: Liverpool’s Title Charge

Despite transfer speculation, Lynch dismissed the panic from some Liverpool fans after recent defeats: “It’s absolutely baffling to me that people can’t think beyond the last two results… Liverpool are going to win the league.”

Liverpool’s 12-point lead remains strong, and as Lynch pointed out, the Opta model gives them a 99% chance of lifting the title.

“For Liverpool to throw it away now, they’d have to lose four games, and Arsenal would have to be perfect. Both of those things are extremely unlikely.”

With fixtures looking favourable, the Premier League title is within reach. The real challenge will come in the summer, when Liverpool must strengthen smartly to build on their success under Arne Slot.
