Manchester City face Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday in a crucial fixture that could shape the title race. However, Pep Guardiola’s side head into the clash with major injury concerns, particularly surrounding Erling Haaland’s availability.
City fans have been left waiting for clarity on Haaland’s condition, following his early withdrawal in the 4-0 win over Newcastle. The Norwegian striker appeared to injure his knee after landing awkwardly, and despite being included in the travelling squad for the Champions League tie against Real Madrid, he played no part.

Speaking after the 3-1 defeat at the Bernabéu, Guardiola admitted that Haaland “tried to train after the action against Newcastle,” but still felt discomfort. “Probably, with the images (scans) we have done, it’s fine, but he has discomfort walking, for example with stairs, and we spoke yesterday and this morning and he said he’s not ready, he doesn’t feel good.”

With Haaland’s involvement against Liverpool still in doubt, Guardiola may turn to January signing Omar Marmoush, who scored a hat-trick against Newcastle and has impressed in recent weeks.

Guardiola has other key injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s game. John Stones was forced off early against Real Madrid and is unlikely to feature, meaning Nathan Aké could partner Rúben Dias in central defence.

At right-back, there is a decision to be made after Abdukodir Khusanov’s struggles against Vinícius Júnior. Either Matheus Nunes or Rico Lewis could step in to reinforce the defence.
City’s midfield will continue to function without Rodri, who remains sidelined, while Manuel Akanji and Oscar Bobb are also unavailable. However, Kevin De Bruyne is expected to return after being rested for two consecutive games. Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku, and Mateo Kovačić are all available and in contention for starting spots.
