Manchester City will face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the Champions League play-off round.

Pep Guardiola’s side booked their place in the playoff round with a 3-1 win over Club Brugge on matchday eight. In a must-win fixture for the 2023 winners, City came from behind at the Etihad to seal their place in the knockout stages.

Goals from Mateo Kovacic and Savinho, either side of an own goal from Joel Ordonez, sealed progress for the Citizens.

After a challenging European campaign, City progress in 22nd position in the table. As such, Guardiola’s side are guaranteed to face either holders Real Madrid or German giants Bayern Munich in the next stage.

The draw for the knockout phase play-off round of the Champions League will be held at 11:00 GMT on Friday 31 January in Switzerland.

The teams that finished the league phase in positions ranked ninth to 16th will be seeded and will play the second leg of the ties at home. Potential opponents are pre-determined by final finishing position in the league phase.

The clubs who finished ninth and tenth will face the sides that ended 23rd or 24th in the table, while the teams who finished 11th and 12th will take on either the 21st or 22nd placed-teams etc.

With City ending the league phase 22nd, the Blues know that either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich await in a tough tie.
