Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim expressed serious concern over Matthijs de Ligt’s fitness after the Dutch defender was forced off with an apparent injury during United’s dramatic 4-3 loss to Brentford on Sunday.
The match, which was full of twists and turns, took a worrying turn for the Red Devils when De Ligt, making his first start in nearly a month, went to ground in clear discomfort and had to be substituted in the 35th minute.
De Ligt had only just returned to action days earlier, coming off the bench in United’s impressive 3-0 away win over Athletic Club in the Europa League.
That appearance had been viewed as a major positive, especially with United’s defensive depth being tested in recent weeks.
Amorim had seen the centre-back’s return as a timely reinforcement as the club pushes to secure European silverware. However, his early exit against Brentford has now cast a shadow over those hopes.
The injury appeared to occur during the build-up to Brentford’s second goal, and De Ligt’s visible frustration and subsequent limp down the tunnel sparked alarm across the Man United fanbase.
After the match, Amorim did little to ease those concerns, admitting he was “really worried” about the extent of the issue.
“I don’t know [how serious De Ligt’s injury is], so I’m really concerned – not about Thursday,” Amorim explained to BBC Sports.
“We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect and have players for Thursday, but I’m more concerned whether it is a small or big injury and thinking about next season.”

The Portuguese coach suggested that the injury might be more serious than initially feared, and hinted that it could potentially affect not just the rest of this campaign, but preparations for next season as well.
With the Europa League being United’s last realistic path to silverware and a return to the Champions League, the timing of De Ligt’s setback could not be worse.
United supporters and coaching staff alike will now anxiously await further updates, hoping the Dutchman can recover quickly and play a role in what remains of the season.
