Manchester United’s summer rebuild is gathering momentum, and in a surprising development, Kobbie Mainoo has been named among the players potentially available for sale. Despite being viewed as a vital part of the club’s future, shifting dynamics behind the scenes suggest he could be sacrificed to fund an extensive squad revamp.
Mainoo, once considered untouchable, now finds himself at the centre of transfer speculation. Reports suggest that Man Utd are no longer ruling out his departure, with Chelsea among the clubs showing keen interest. His contract situation adds to the uncertainty—while he is approaching the final two years of his deal, it remains unclear whether United have an option to extend it by 12 months.
Further fuelling speculation, claims have emerged that the 18-year-old midfielder is contemplating rejecting new contract offers in favour of a move abroad. This has led to discussions within the club about whether his sale could provide the necessary financial boost for their summer transfer plans.
According to Florian Plettenberg, United are assessing several potential departures, believing that player sales will generate the funds required to reshape the squad. Mainoo is reportedly on the list of possible exits, alongside high-profile names such as Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Marcus Rashford, and Antony.
While previous reports have valued Mainoo at around £70m, United are not actively looking to sell him. The preference remains to secure his future with a new contract. However, the club is firm in its stance—players unwilling to extend their stay will not be allowed to leave for free.
Despite his growing importance in Ruben Amorim’s system, Mainoo remains one of the lowest earners in the squad. Understandably, he seeks a contract that reflects his value. United, however, are wary of another protracted contract saga and will prioritise financial prudence over sentiment.
The coming months will be pivotal. If Mainoo signals any reluctance to commit to fresh terms, United may reluctantly sanction his sale, ensuring they benefit financially rather than risk losing him for nothing in the future.
