Manchester City are in “direct talks” to secure the signing of Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez before Monday’s transfer deadline.
The Premier League champions have been very active in the winter transfer window and have secured five signings already, with Omar Marmoush being their most expensive purchase.
City are still looking to sign one more player before the end of the window, as they want to add a new midfielder to their ranks.
According to David Ornstein, City are attempting to complete a deadline-day move for the 23-year-old midfielder.
At the moment, there is no agreement between the two clubs, and there is no guarantee that a deal will be agreed by Monday night’s deadline.
Fabrizio Romano claims that City are in “direct talks” to sign Gonzalez and the negotiation is ongoing.
City will have no issues in meeting personal terms with Gonzalez, but they will have to meet the player’s release clause, which stands at €60 million.
Romano wrote on X: “Manchester City have made direct contact again this morning with FC Porto to advance on Nico González deal. No issues on personal terms but Porto insist on €60m release clause for Nico.”
City desperately need some fresh spark in midfield. They were toothless against Arsenal on Sunday, as they lost 5-1 away from home. But they are running out of time to reach an agreement.
Gonzalez is capable of playing in both the No. 6 and No. 8 positions, and he would be perfect under Pep Guardiola.
He is a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia youth system and made 37 first-team appearances for the Catalan club before spending 2022-23 on loan at Valencia.
Barca inserted a 40 per cent sell-on clause when they sold him to Porto.
