Fresh uncertainty has been issued over the future of Manchester City and Germany international goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno, in a new interview.

The Etihad Stadium’s back-up goalkeeper has been called upon in his usual cup matches for the reigning Premier League champions this season, rarely putting a foot and glove wrong despite the club’s defensive issues throughout the campaign to date.

Ederson has found himself struggling with a number of injury and fitness problems, thus requiring his goalkeeping teammate to stand in for him in top-flight and Champions League matches, too.

The Brazilian himself has found his name at the centre of various transfer reports in the last 18 months in particular, with clubs in Saudi Arabia having entered into various levels of talks with Manchester City over the possibility of a deal last summer.

But as Pep Guardiola’s side enters into a new phase in the club’s development after a hugely troublesome season across competitions, it may not just be Ederson’s name at the centre of further rumours this summer.

Speaking during a new interview with German outlet Kicker during the international break, Stefan Ortega Moreno admitted his apparent delight at playing an increased number of matches under Pep Guardiola during his time to date with the club.

“I think I’ve played a considerable number of games since I’ve been there (at Manchester City),” Ortega Moreno said, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness this week.

However, despite the happiness at opportunities on the field, the former Bundesliga shot-stopper has offered some uncertainty over his future at the club amid growing transfer interest from his home country and elsewhere in European football.

“Sometimes things happen very quickly,” Ortega Moreno said on his future beyond the ongoing season.

“I can’t yet say what will happen in the summer,” he continued. “Anything is possible. We know the world of football; things can happen very quickly sometimes.”

For now, it remains to be seen whether Stefan Ortega Moreno – who has had long-standing desires of becoming Manchester City’s number one choice goalkeeper – would entertain the idea of an exit in the coming months.

Should Ederson’s departure be given the green light by Etihad Stadium decision makers in the summer transfer window, there remains every chance that the current back-up could be promoted into the role of first-choice.

However, with Hugo Viana arriving as the club’s new sporting director to replace Txiki Begiristain ahead of the new season, the Portuguese official may have other ideas when it comes to Pep Guardiola’s playing squad.
