Manchester United have long looked like suffering their worst-ever Premier League campaign – and now it’s official.

Ruben Amorim’s team were badly beaten at Newcastle United on Sunday, with the emphatic 4-1 loss at St James’ Park their 14th of the league campaign. United are 14th in the table, having never previously finished lower than eighth in the Premier League era.

The latest loss also means the Red Devils can now finish on a maximum of 56 points, two less than their previous record low, achieved in 2021/22. United were second-best throughout at Newcastle as the home side overpowered a team lacking in confidence and quality.

Speaking at full-time, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane questioned the attitude of the squad and called his old side ‘physically and mentally weak.

“We keep making excuses for this Man United team. There aren’t enough players that can run in this team, I think there are players that don’t want to run,” he said to Sky Sports.

“Newcastle were outstanding. I think United now are physically and mentally a weak team. Newcastle were too fast, too powerful, they were more determined and they got what they deserved.

“Well done Newcastle, they were outstanding but United, there was talk before the game that things were getting better for this United team but I can’t see it. I worry for this group of players. To me, they do not look like a strong group mentally.”

All hopes of salvaging their season now rest on the Europa League, with success in that tournament offering the dual prize of silverware and Champions League qualification. United host Lyon in the second leg of their quarter-final tie on Thursday, with score tied at 2-2 on aggregate.
