Marco Baroni ‘Disappointed’ With Roma Derby Draw, Explains Lazio Subtitutions

Marco Baroni believes Lazio should have come away with a better result in the Derby della Capitale against Roma.
Although the first half ended goalless, the Biancocelesti were clearly the better side. They then confirmed their superiority by finding the opener early in the second period through Alessio Romagnoli. However, their inability to score the second returned to haunt them, as Matias Soulè pulled off a screamer that earned the Giallorossi a valuable point.
In his post-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Baroni expressed his disappointment with the outcome, while shifting his attention to the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Bodo/Glimt.
We’re sorry because I think the team did a lot to deserve the win. We had a lot of chances, whereas Roma only shot twice on goal. We’re a bit disappointed but the team put in a solid performance. I asked them to give their all in this derby. I congratulated the lads. On Thursday I think we will see a different game compared to the one played in Bodo because there were difficult conditions that we weren’t used to. -3 degrees, sleet, a slippery pitch… But I do not want excuses, we need to have our heads in the game, all together, the team and the fans are convinced that we can recover.
While some fans weren’t happy with the exits of Taty Castellanos and Gustav Isaksen in the second half, the Lazio manager revealed the reasons behind these two substitutions.
Dia did very well after his entry, the same for Belahyane and Pedro. As for Taty, we had planned the change beforhand. I told him to give it his all. Thursday will be an important match and he will definitely be a starter. Isaksen was exhausted, we needed fresh legs and players who could keep the ball. After scoring our goal, we lost a bit of composure but Roma were never dangerous. We will need everyone on Thursday and those who came on today could start.
Baroni also commented on the situation revolving around his two goalkeepers, with Christos Mandas recently usurping Ivan Provedel in the selections.
Mandas made an important save, but Svilar had to make several more. There is no problem regarding Provedel and Mandas. As I said before, Mandas is doing great in training and is now showing it on the pitch, but so is Provedel. We are all one team, and they are all starters now. There is no hierarchy, we need everyone and only by using everyone we can advance across all competitions.
