Matai Akinmboni's brilliant future in the Premier League is a landmark moment for DC United and Major League Soccer. The 18-year-old defender has transferred to AFC Bournemouth of England in a deal worth as much as $2.5 million, including a sell-on clause. Announced by D.C. United, the move underlines both the talent of Akinmboni and the work of the club's academy in bringing through players capable of competing at the very highest level.
Such transitions from a league like the MLS to the likes of the Premier League-one of the toughest and most competitive in the world-are pretty uncommon for young defenders. Still, he was just 18 and had given sufficient reason to believe in the hype as arguably the best defensive prospect in the league.
