Milan likely to play 4-4-2 against Inter | OneFootball

Milan manager Paulo Fonseca is set to adopt a new system ahead of the Derby della Madonnina showdown against Inter, switching form 4-2-3-1 to a more attacking 4-4-2 formation.

The Portuguese has thus far been relying on solitary striker, alternating between Tammy Abraham, Luka Jovic and Alvaro Morata. However, his 4-2-3-1 system hasn’t yielded much success in the early going, with the team only registering a single victory in five competitive fixtures across all competitions.

Just a few weeks into the new campaign, Fonseca is already walking on thin ice, and some observers believe a Derby defeat could spell a swift end to his time at Milanello.

So according to MilanNews, the 51-year-old has decided to ring the changes, implementing a more attacking 4-4-2 formation.

Fonseca will reportedly field both Abraham and Morata up front. The two strikers will be supported by Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao on the wings.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be dropped from the lineup, with Tijjani Reijnders and Youssouf Fofana operating in the double pivot.

At the back, Mattia Gabbia could gain a starting berth at the expense of Strahinja Pavlovic. The Italian would link up with Fikayo Tomori at centre-back, while Emerson Royal replaced the injured Davide Calabria on the right side, and Theo Hernandez occupying the opposite flank as usual.

Finally, Mike Maignan should be able to start after overcoming an injury scare suffered during the Champions League defeat to Liverpool in midweek.
