Minnesota United FC has announced the signing of Owen Gene, a 21-year-old French midfielder arriving from Amiens SC, a club in France’s second division. The transfer was completed for approximately $2 million, and Gene has signed a contract through 2027, with an option to extend until 2028. He will occupy a U22 Initiative roster spot in MLS, a program that allows clubs to sign young talents without heavily impacting the salary budget.
Minnesota United’s sporting director, Khaled El-Ahmad, highlighted Gene’s experience and the qualities he brings to the squad: "Owen joins our club with over 100 league appearances, adding quality, depth, and more competition to our midfield. We are excited to welcome him to Minnesota, and the club is eager to see the impact he can have on the team this season, as well as his growth and development as a young soccer player."
Gene arrives at Minnesota United after progressing through Amiens SC’s academy, where he made his professional debut in 2021. Since then, he has played 109 professional matches, scoring one goal and providing six assists. On the international stage, he received his first call-up to France’s U-20 national team in March 2023.
The American club has been active in the transfer market, securing key signings to reinforce the squad ahead of the new season. Alongside Gene, Minnesota United also acquired midfielder Hoyeon Jung from K League 1 and defender Nicolás Romero from Atlético Tucumán in Argentina.
Gene’s arrival aligns with the team’s strategy of investing in young players who can develop and add long-term value. Head coach Eric Ramsay, now entering his second year with Minnesota United, will be tasked with integrating the new signings and finding the best role for Gene in the midfield.
Adjusting to a new environment will be crucial for Gene’s success at Minnesota United. MLS has unique characteristics, featuring a fast-paced and physically demanding style of play. The French midfielder has expressed his excitement about this next step in his career.
"I am very happy and proud to join this club and this exciting, highly competitive league that MLS has become. It’s a new and thrilling challenge for me. Minnesota is a strong club with a talented squad and great players. I am grateful for the trust the club has placed in me. I will give my best every time I step on the field and wear the Minnesota badge."
Minnesota United kicks off the 2025 MLS season on February 22 against LAFC. This will be the first opportunity for Owen Gene to showcase his abilities and start his MLS journey.
