Italian journalist Sandro Piccinini compares ex-Juventus coach Thiago Motta to the Titanic Captain as he hadn’t seen troubles coming: ‘He could ask his old coach, José Mourinho, what happened in Rome last year.’

Motta was sacked by Juventus last month after just nine months in charge.

The former Italy international partially admitted his responsibility in a recent interview with Corriere della Sera, but denied having a poor relationship with part of the dressing room.

“Motta’s latest words are surprising. He keeps saying everything was fine, like a captain who didn’t see the iceberg. This is why Giuntoli called Tudor,” Piccinini, one of Italy’s most famous journalists told La Repubblica.

“Motta said the relationship with the players was excellent and that everyone saying otherwise is lying. But something doesn’t add up here: if the relationship was so good. What happened against Atalanta and Fiorentina? Why those disasters?”

Motta suffered heavy defeats in his last two games in charge of Juventus, losing 4-0 at home against Atalanta and 3-0 away at Fiorentina.

“Motta mentioned a few minor errors and some wrong choices, but those were catastrophic defeats,” continued Piccinini.

“How can they be explained if everything was going well internally? He still hasn’t understood the difference between public statements and private behaviour. He could ask his old coach, José Mourinho, what happened in Rome last year in this regard. If Motta was honest in his interview, maybe he hadn’t realised something wasn’t right.”

Juventus replaced the former Bologna coach with Igor Tudor. The Croatian tactician has signed a contract until the end of the season and will remain in charge during the 2025 Club World Cup this summer.

Juventus is unbeaten in two games under Tudor, having beaten Genoa 1-0 and drawn 1-1 against Roma.

“This is why Giuntoli saw Motta like the Titanic captain from the beautiful De Gregori song—the one who said, ‘It’s just a bit foggy, let’s calmly move ahead. ‘ When Giuntoli realised this, he called Tudor,” Piccinini concluded.
