Arsenal are reportedly preparing a bold move to sign not one, but two of Newcastle United’s star players this summer. According to Spanish outlet AS, the Gunners are eyeing a £60 million deal for Bruno Guimarães, with Alexander Isak also on their radar.
The potential double swoop could shake up the Premier League transfer market. Newcastle fans will be hoping their key players stay put.
The reports suggest that Guimarães’ move could be triggered if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League. However, sources close to the club have dismissed these claims, insisting there is no such clause in the Brazilian’s contract. Guimarães joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022 for £40 million. He has become a fan favorite and a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s midfield.
Even though Arsenal is interested in Guimarães, the player is believed to be happy at Newcastle and considers the club his "second home." The 26-year-old just recently got a new deal that keeps him at St. James' Park until 2028. This makes any possible move more difficult and pricey.
Arsenal’s interest in Guimarães comes as they prepare for a midfield rebuild. With Thomas Partey and Jorginho likely to leave this summer, Mikel Arteta sees the Brazilian as an ideal replacement. Guimarães’ ability to control games, break up play, and contribute goals makes him a perfect fit for Arsenal’s system.
Arsenal is also said to be interested in Newcastle's prolific striker, Alexander Isak. This season, the Swedish forward has been in great shape, striking 17 goals in the Premier League. Isak, like Guimarães, has a long-term deal, though, and is seen as an important part of Newcastle's future.
The potential signings of Guimarães, Isak, and Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi could cost Arsenal around £200 million. Even though the Gunners want to strengthen their squad, it won't be easy to sign both these players from Newcastle.
