Some interesting odds on Premier League top four (and other possibilities) for the 2024/25 season where Newcastle United are concerned.
With bookies taking stock after these weekend results, including that NUFC defeat to Bournemouth.
A nine match winning run now at an end.
That defeat coming in the twenty second PL round of matches.
The bookies and punters reacting to how things now stand in the Premier League table (see below), as well of course, how they are now seeing the underlying strengths of the various teams and squads.
Listed below are the general Premier League odds now (morning of 20 January 2025) available from the various bookies for the 2024/25 season (in brackets are what the odds were after the very opening round of PL games):
Win the Premier League:
1/4 (13/2) Liverpool
5/1 (9/5) Arsenal
25/1 (11/8) Man City
33/1 (1,500/1) Forest
80/1 (40/1) Chelsea
125/1 (40/1) Newcastle United
1,000/1 (66/1) Aston Villa
1,000/1 (1,000/1) Bournemouth
So Newcastle United now rated sixth most ‘likely’.
At the very top, Liverpool even stronger favourites after getting a very late win, making it four victories from their last eight Premier League matches, with Arsenal seen by the bookies as the only serious potential threat, even though they threw away a two goal lead to only draw with Villa.
This is how the Premier League table looks today (Monday 20 January 2025):
Premier League relegation:
1/100 (1/1) Southampton
1/7 (1/2) Leicester
4/7 (10/11) Ipswich
9/4 (7/2) Wolves
5/1 (5/2) Everton
14/1 (12/1) Man City
25/1 (20/1) West Ham
50/1 (250/1) Man U
66/1 (250/1) Tottenham
100/1 (10/1) Palace
100/1 (7/1) Brentford
200/1 (40/1) Brighton
500/1 (3/1) Forest
500/1 (200/1) Villa
500/1 (11/2) Fulham
500/1 (7/1) Bournemouth
500/1 (40/1) Chelsea
500/1 (250/1) Newcastle United
4,000/1 (2,000/1) Arsenal
4,500/1 (2,000/1) Liverpool
Eddie Howe’s team now seen as joint third least likely to go down in the 2024/25 season.
If you are wondering about the Man City 14/1 odds of relegation, this is due to the possibility (probability?) of severe punishment from the 115 Premier League charges they face, which could include amongst other sanctions, points deduction or even relegation. Still waiting for the outcome of that case.
Finish Premier League top four:
1/250 (1/2) Liverpool
1/20 (1/9) Arsenal
4/9 (1/7) Man City
8/11 (9/4) Chelsea
7/4 (9/4) Newcastle United
15/8 (100/1) Forest
10/1 (7/2) Villa
10/1 (66/1) Bournemouth
16/1 (11/1) Brighton
66/1 (66/1) Fulham
200/1 (2/1) Man U
200/1 (9/4) Tottenham
300/1 (66/1) Brentford
This is where, like me, I guess you will be giving most focus.
Can Newcastle United bounce back into the Premier League top four and get Champions League football?
Well, the bookies now have NUFC still fifth most likely after six wins in the last seven in the Premier League, despite that defeat to Bournemouth. Newcastle United now only just ahead of Forest, whilst edging a little further behind both Chelsea (who are home to Wolves tonight) and Man City in the eyes of the bookies, when it comes to most likely to finish Premier League top four, along with Liverpool and Arsenal.
It is now a trip for Eddie Howe’s side to rock bottom Southampton.
