Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has revealed that one of his star players is set to sign a new contract very soon.

The Magpies have six players whose current deals are set to run out at the end of this season, but at least one of them will extend their stay at St. James’ Park beyond this year.

The man in question is centre-back Fabian Schar, who has been a key member of the squad for the past seven years.

The Switzerland international joined Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018 after the Premier League side activated his £3 million release clause.

Schar, who has made 220 appearances for the Tyneside outfit in all competitions since then, has gone to be one of the best bargain buys the club has ever made. He started in the League Cup final win over Liverpool last month, helping the club lift their first piece of domestic silverware in 70 years.

“Fabi will hopefully be signing his contract imminently, if he hasn’t already to my knowledge,” Howe said in a pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Brentford.

Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis, and goalkeepers John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie could leave the club this summer with their contracts about to expire.

Newcastle are likely to be busy in the transfer window, but Howe gave nothing away about their plans to sign and sell players.

“That is going on in the background without my involvement at the moment,” he said. “But that will change in the next few weeks.”
