Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe sounded a cautionary note after his team recorded a club-record equalling nine-game winning streak in all competitions.

He insisted that the Magpies needed to continue in the same vein after moving into a good position, but his comments have not been heeded.

Newcastle produced a dreadful second-half display at St James’ Park on Saturday, allowing Fulham to recover from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory.

Howe’s side have now picked up just three points from their last three Premier League outings and things could get worse over the next few weeks.

Howe needs a response from his players

Newcastle will need to improve midweek if they are to protect their 2-0 first-leg lead against Arsenal and reach the Carabao Cup final.

A tricky fourth-round tie at League One leaders Birmingham City could also be problematic if the Magpies continue to produce under-par performances.

Newcastle then meet three of the top six in the league as they face Manchester City (A), Nottingham Forest (H) and Liverpool (A).

With the club unlikely to conduct any major business before the transfer window closes, Howe will need to get his current crop of players firing again.

Newcastle’s season is in serious danger of unravelling unless Howe can trigger an immediate improvement from his squad.
