Gavi remains an important player for both Hansi Flick and the Barcelona squad. Since emerging in the 2021/22 season, the La Masia graduate brought a much-needed competitive edge to the team.
However, in recent weeks has seen his influence in the starting eleven wane. After recovering from injury, Gavi appeared to be an irreplaceable figure, but of late, his role has diminished.
As reported by SPORT, it is now evident that Hansi Flick considers him part of the midfield rotation, with Pedri and Frenkie de Jong firmly established as starters.
Gavi is facing his most difficult period since his debut as he is no longer a guaranteed starter in midfield at Barcelona.
Flick has handled the 20-year-old’s return with great care. The midfielder rejoined the team at the end of October, with the coach gradually increasing his playing time to help him regain match fitness.
By December, he was once again a near-permanent fixture in the lineup, despite competition from six other midfielders.
Gavi delivered strong performances, but Flick now appears to favour a more attacking midfield setup, which has seen the young Spaniard lose his place in the team.

Recent matches have confirmed this shift. Gavi did not start against Alaves, was substituted at half-time against Sevilla after receiving a yellow card, and was also taken off against Rayo Vallecano after another booking.
The Spaniard remained on the bench for the match against Las Palmas and did not start against Atletico Madrid either. When he did come on in the second half, it coincided with Atletico’s comeback, which saw them overturn a two-goal deficit to secure a draw.
Flick values Gavi’s competitive spirit, which provides the team with an extra edge in certain matches. However, the midfielder is no longer a guaranteed starter, often being substituted or left on the bench.
Another concern for Barcelona’s coaching staff is Gavi’s aggressive style of play, which is increasingly attracting the attention of referees in La Liga. His intensity often results in bookings, a trend Flick is keen to address to ensure his effectiveness on the pitch.
Despite this setback, Barcelona remain fully committed to Gavi. The Catalans recently secured him on a long-term contract and view him as a key part of their future.
But with Pedri and De Jong cementing their places in midfield it leaves only one available spot, for which Gavi must contest with Marc Casado, Fermin Lopez, and, most significantly, Dani Olmo, Barcelona’s marquee signing this season.
