Borussia Dortmund confirmed the permanent capture of Daniel Svensson on Wednesday. The reported upon purchase clause has been triggered with the Swedish defender signing a contract with the Bundesliga side until 2029.
Multiple German sources confirm a €6.5m transfer fee. Dortmund already paid Denmark’s FC Nordsjælland loan fee to acquire Svensson during the January transfer window. The now once-capped Swedish international maintains an estimated market value of €5.5m.
Svensson immediately impressed BVB head coach Niko Kovac and the German club’s desire to keep the 23-year-old remained common knowledge. Since returning from a medial ligament injury, he has been in the starting line-up every game since matchday 28.
Svensson scored his first Bundesliga goal against against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 30. He followed that up with two assists a week later in the 2-3 away win at Hoffenheim.
“Daniel has fully met our expectations from day one,” BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl noted in a club statement. “He settled in quickly and immediately enriched our team with his performances. His flexibility fits very well with our style of play and give us a lot of options. This is quite logical.”
“I’ve been very well received here and was able to integrate into the team quickly,” the player himself added. “BVB is a big club with great fans. My goal is for us to celebrate success together here. I will work hard every day to achieve that.”
